COVID-19 hasn’t just changed the workplace, it’s changed the recruitment process too. But has it changed the way we recruit forever? According to ManpowerGroup, 57% of organisations expect normal hiring levels to resume throughout 2021 but what does “normal hiring” even look like anymore? The coronavirus pandemic has changed the game and the playing field in one fell swoop and recruitment has been radically altered.
Recruiters now have to consider a candidates mental wellbeing much more than they did previously. This can be anything from mental health issues to their personal needs regarding their home lives and working preferences. This is had a particularly significant impact on HR jobs, with HR teams likely to be dealing with the mental fallout of the pandemic for some time.
The concept of being able to work a couple of days from home every week or even full-time might have seemed laughable this time last year but COVID has caused the remote working movement to take a few pretty dramatic steps forward. This means all recruiters must be fluent in video conferencing and in the prospect of hiring remotely for remote positions. This is something that’s unlikely to change, even in the long term.
The competition for positions is going to be much higher going forward with unemployment rising and more people having to retrain in new careers. This is going to make things tougher in one regard and easier in another. Because there will be more candidates to choose from but sorting the wheat from the chaff is going to prove even more trying.
Recruitment companies that relied on the old school face-to-face methods are going to struggle, as the future of recruitment is in software and it’s in the cloud. Technology shouldn’t be seen as a hurdle to overcome but as a tool for finding the right person for the job. There are thousands of AI and machine learning tools, for example, that can work to make the job of the recruiter that much easier.
Company culture was always traditionally seen as something intangible but these days it’s a buzzword that has legitimate meaning. It encompasses everything from the value’s to the atmosphere at work and how flexible employers are prepared to be and it’s something all recruiters will need to start taking seriously from this point onwards.
A streamlined process
All of the above point to the necessity of a more compact and streamlined recruitment process and that’s something recruitment Consultants across the world will need to consider if they wish to remain relevant in a post-COVID world.
