Hiring the right person is a very big responsibility, and you want to make sure that you find someone fit for the job they need to do.
Below is a list of common mistakes employers make when hiring new personnel that you should try to steer away from. This way, you won't hire someone who wouldn't be fit for the job.
It is really easy to look at someone you know and have a strong relationship with and give that person a job. Even though there might be someone who is much more qualified and capable of completing the essential tasks necessary in the job requirements, when biasly choosing someone for a work position, you are taking a big risk and using past events and emotions to contribute to your decision.
When picking underqualified friends and family for job positions, it might ruin your relationship with said person. For example, suppose your friend and family member is unqualified for the job you give them. In that case, it could be frustrating to watch them constantly make mistakes and hurt the company, thus frustrating you and ruining your relationship.
The interview portion of applying for a job is a very important step, but that does not mean that you should base Everything on that interview. You have to keep in mind the position that people are applying for. If the work requires a very approachable and likable personality, choosing someone like that won't be an issue.
That being said, if the job doesn't require an outgoing, extroverted personality, then you should look more heavily into their resume. If it comes down to two qualified applicants for a desk job where an extroverted personality isn't required, and one has slightly more qualifications but didn't nail the interview, it might be smart to hire that person.
One of the most common mistakes that most employers make is giving a false impression of what the job offers. Providing a less than appealing job description may drive away those who may be qualified and interested. But, on the other side, if you oversell the job, you will get too many applicants with a false impression of what the job truly is.
Both of these scenarios are far too common, and an easy way to avoid both is to be black and white. Instead, give the job title and exactly what is required of the applicants, both to get hired and to fulfill their duties with the position. Don't be lazy with the description, but don't sugarcoat what the job is all about.
